CBD For Sleep: Does It Work?

People use CBD to help with different aspects of life, but when it comes to CBD for sleep: does it work?

There are a ton of different CBD products that are designed specifically to help you get a good night’s rest. There are gummies with melatonin, CBD tea crafted to sooth you to sleep, and tinctures that are so relaxing they should only be used when it’s time for bed.

If you have trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. A surprising number of people in the U.S don’t get enough sleep. This lack of sleep can have a massive impact on your daily life. It can hinder performance and make your day far more difficult than it needs to be.

CBD has quickly become one of the most popular solutions for those who find themselves tossing and turning at night. Not only are these products designed specifically to help you sleep, they also happen to be incredibly enjoyable.

It’s no secret that CBD is relaxing, but can it really help you sleep?

The Importance of Sleep

Sleeping is one of the few things that all humans do. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, you need to sleep.

We all have unique bodies that function in different ways, but like water, without sleep you’d be in serious trouble.

Lack of sleep can lead to heightened inflammation, irritability, and in extreme cases, death. It’s often said that sleep is more important than food. This is because you can actually live longer without food than you can without sleep.

Starvation typically takes between 40-70 days. While there aren’t any recorded cases of people dying from lack of sleep, scientists believe that not sleeping for 2-3 weeks could kill you.

You likely aren’t going to die from lack of sleep. It is actually quite difficult because when the body wants to sleep, it is nearly impossible to stop it. That does not mean lack of sleep is ok.

Irritability and a reduced capacity to focus are pretty much guaranteed. If you go long enough without sleep you will certainly feel the ramifications.

The Sleep Cycle

It’s crucial that you get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. The body goes through different sleep cycles and to feel fully rested, you must complete each cycle. Without ample time, this won’t happen.

Stages 1 and 2 of the sleep cycle are referred to as “non-REM sleep”. These are the parts of the sleep cycle where you’re just starting drifting off to sleep. The EGG signals from the brain slow, and the body relaxes.

During stages 3 and 4, your EGG slows further and your eyes start to move rapidly. These stages make up what is referred to as “deep sleep”.

Stage 5 takes the longest to reach and it’s the most important. “REM” sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) is when you are fully asleep and dreaming. Without REM sleep, your body doesn’t recover to the extent that it should and you’re left feeling groggy, irritable, and unrested.

Insomnia in the U.S

Insomnia rates in the United States have reached near-epidemic proportions. The CDC estimates that roughly 35% of men and 34% of women in the U.S aren’t getting their full 7 hours of sleep.

This equates to about 164 million Americans who have difficulty falling, or staying asleep. Sleeplessness can be caused by a variety of factors. Some people have a difficult time leaving the stress of work at the office, others seem to toss and turn all night for no apparent reason.

Sleeping is of the same importance as things like eating and drinking; the body just can’t function without it.

Fortunately, countless people have found relief by utilizing the power of cannabidiol.

How Does CBD Work?

It’s easy to see the results of CBD, but hard to quantify how we get there. Though CBD is one of the most popular health and wellness products on the market, there’s still a lot we don’t know.

CBD indirectly interfaces with the endocannabinoid system. This is a complex series of retrograde neurotransmitters that exists in all mammals. The endocannabinoid system helps the body manage both the central and peripheral nervous systems via CB1 and CB2 receptors.

These cannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body and have a big influence on how you feel. People tend to report feeling a calm mind and body when using CBD products, which is one of the reasons they’re so popular for sleep.
