What Is THCA?

You’ve probably heard of THC—the cannabinoid popular for cannabis’s iconic, cerebral effects. But THCA might sound unfamiliar. Like THC, THCA is in all forms of the cannabis plant, including hemp and marijuana (commonly called weed.) THCA, short for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is the acidic form of THCA and is the chemical precursor to THC. THCA is not psychoactive or intoxicating when ingested. 

However, when THCA is decarboxylated, it transforms into THC, causing its cerebral effects. What is decarboxylation? In this sense, it’s when the THCA molecule undergoes intense pressure and heat. THC vs. THCA

When you ignite a THCA molecule, that THCA molecule loses its carboxyl ring, converting it into psychoactive THC. The main difference between these two cannabinoids is their effects. THCA offers calming, therapeutic effects that don’t elicit feelings of euphoria.
